Recentemente Carl F. Hostetter ha scritto su Lambengolmor:
"Sono lieto di annunciare che il n. 47 di Vinyar Tengwar verrà pubblicato alla fine di questo mese. VT 47 contiene la prima parte di "Eldarin Hands, Fingers & Numerals and Related Writings", una collezione di testi divisa in Quattro parti e risalente all’ultimo periodo di produzione di J.R.R. Tolkien (1968 circa), raccolti e curati da Patrick H. Wynne. La I Parte introduce il saggio che dà il titolo all’intera raccolta, ovvero Eldarin Hands, Fingers & Numerals (HFN), uno studio storico-filologico, mai concluso, il quale fornisce una descrizione di tutti i termini connessi alla parola “mano” e loro derivati in Eldarin, Quenya, Telerin, e Sindarin, con un breve excursus sulle capacità ambidestre degli Elfi. Il saggio prosegue indicando in dettaglio i nomi Eldarin per le dita delle mani (e dei piedi) e i “nomignoli” creati per gioco dai bambini, che assegnano a ciascun dito il nome di un membro di un’immaginaria famiglia: padre, madre e figli. Lo studio dimostra infine come i nomi delle dita siano strettamente connessi allo sviluppo delle radici numeriche in Eldarin Comune. Segue poi un testo che tratta dell’origine etimologica delle radici Eldarin Comune neter 9, kanat 4 e enek 6, quasi una sorta di finale alternativo al saggio. Entrambi i testi contengono note editoriali arricchite da citazioni tratte da molti degli scritti inediti di Tolkien. Le parti II e IV (i cui contenuti sono elencati e descritti nell’introduzione a HFN) verranno pubblicati nel n. 48 di Vinyar Tengwar.

Finalmente è uscito A Gateway to Sindarin. A Grammar of an Elvish Language from J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, il libro di David Salo! Ecco cosa ha scritto l’autore su Elfling: l’Università dello Utah ha appena pubblicato la mia grammatica Sindarin, "A Gateway to Sindarin" – un tentativo di ricambiare in qualche modo la gentile pazienza che la comunità linguistica tolkeniana mi ha (quasi sempre!) dimostrato. Il libro non contiene alcuna dedica ufficiale, ma vorrei ugualmente dedicarlo a tutti i giovani studiosi di Sindarin e delle altre lingue elfiche. Io avevo appena otto anni quando ho cominciato a guardare alle lingue di Tolkien cercandovi una qualche coerenza in mezzo agli appunti sparsi dei suoi molti scritti. E avevo ventisette anni quando ho preso tutti i dati accumulate nel tempo e ho provato ad abbozzare un libro. Per diversi anni il testo è rimasto niente altro che un semplice manoscritto, dato che continuavo ad apporvi modifiche e aggiornamenti. L’ edizione rilegata rappresenta una fase di sviluppo dell’opera, la quale non vuole essere considerata come la Bibbia della lingua Sindarin, sarebbe impossibile concepire un libro completamente scevro di imperfezioni. Si tratta piuttosto di un testo che va migliorato, criticato, ripudiato, rimpiazzato – tuttavia, il fatto di avere raccolto in un unico testo una gran quantità di informazioni sulla lingua Sindarin consente anche alla critica di assumere forme costruttive, che possano aprire strade nuove alla ricerca, e non sbarrarle. Fino a quando non verrà create una sintesi moderna, migliore sul tema, ci sarà “A Gateway to Sindarin”. Il libro tratta per intero la filologia interna della lingua, la sua grammatical, la fonologia, la morfologia e I meccanismi di formazione delle parole, la sintassi e il lessico, con particolare enfasi sulle etimologie dei nomi e sullo sviluppo della lingua nel corso del tempo. Il libro contiene anche una legenda che spiega i termini specialistici, così da facilitare la comprensione a chi non è un linguista. Anche se non avete voglia o non avete bisogno di imparare la lingua, bensì volete limitarvi a conoscere il significato di uno dei tanti nomi di Tùrin o volete interpretare uno degli incantesimi di Gandalf in Sindarin, o scrivere e pronunciare la parola “Galadriel”, questo è il libro per voi.

SÍ QENTE FEANOR
è un brano di prosa scritto in Qenya. Tolkien lo scrisse nello stesso
quaderno in cui annotò la favola dal titolo "The Nauglafring" e in cui
scrisse la Grammatica degli Gnomi. La raccolta contiene altri scritti
che appartengono al periodo dei Racconti Perduti, come una lista
di "NAMES AND NECESSARY ALTERATIONS" (ovvero Nomi e loro corrette
declinazioni) in Qenya e in Gnomico, legati all’opera "The Cottage of
Lost Play"; due tavole che illustrano il sistema fonetico dello Gnomico;
e infine vari appunti risalenti al primo periodo di produzione artistica
di Tolkien, con accenni a parole e nomi elfici di cui non esiste altra
menzione altrove.
Il commento editoriale è basato sulle relazioni tra lo
stile di questi testi e le fiabe contemporanee e i loro lessici.
Strettamente legato alla grammatical presentiamo inoltre un DIZIONARIO INGLESE-QENYA la cui compilazione fu abbozzata da Tolkien in questo stesso periodo, così come un parziale INDICE DEI NOMI dell’opera "The Lay of the Children of Húrin". La presente edizione di questi testi è corredata da annotazioni e commenti dettagliati sullo sviluppo concettuale dei diversi scritti.

A proposito di VT #45:questo numero (pp. 45 in tutto) contiene la prima (di due parti) dell’intero insieme di Addenda and Corrigenda (Aggiunte e correzioni) alle 'Etymologies' di Carl F. Hostetter e Patrick H. Wynne, una serie di aggiunte dettagliate e di correzioni a corredo dei saggi che hanno accompagnato i diversi testi pubblicati nel tempo, tra cui manoscritti originali tolkeniani.
VT #46: 36 pagine che racchiudono la seconda parte degli Addenda and Corrigenda delle Etymologies di Carl F. Hostetter e Patrick H. Wynne. Anche qui aggiunte ricche di precisazioni e errata corrige dei lavori precedentemente pubblicati. In più tre appendici: la prima contiene la lista completa dei lemmi così come classificati nelle Etymologies, seguendo l’ordine e la forma anticonvenzionale del manoscritto; la seconda contiene due fogli di appunti sparsi inseriti dallo stesso Tolkien nel manoscritto, mentre la terza riporta un’analisi del sistema linguistico tengwar di cui si trova esempio nelle diverse voci. Wynne, The Goldogrin Past Tense e Goldogrin Pronouns dello stesso autore. Ryszard Derdzinski ha scritto Consonant Mutations in Conceptual Evolution of Noldorin/Sindarin Phonology which has been published for the first time on-line at our website (earlier it was published in Gwaihir #7). Publication of the early Tolkienian material in recent issues of Parma Eldalamberon shows us beauty and harmony of these predecessors of Quenya and Sindarin in LotR. |

New
issue of Parma Eldalamberon has already been published and sent
to the subscribers! I have received it today. In my opinion it is the
true revolution in our Q(u)enya studies! Our yesterday knowledge about
Q(u)enya was about 1% of what we know now. This issue is the absolute
must for every true Tolkien scholar! The material is so vast that I am
not able to write the review. If somebody would like to help me I will
publish his review with pleasure! The part devoted to Valmaric script is
very interesting too! And we can learn that PE #15 will contain more
material from 1920s. I hope it will be published after this issue will
be fully analyzed and comprehended by the Tolkien scholars.
Sindarin Course by Thorsten Renk!

Thorsten Renk, a Sindarinist from Germany has published the first complete course of Sindarin! He presents it on our website! Hannon le, Thorsten!
From Thorsten's Preface: This course was originally only a small project I made up for myself to train the material presented on the German website www.sindarin.de with additional texts and some structure in terms of lessons. It clearly got out of hand since then. As I write these lines, the second German version is out for download, as far as I can observe the course has become one of ’the’ standard documents for German Sindarin students in the web-based communtiy (before they move on to www.ardalambion.com), an exercise book is being prepared and I wrote a similar Quenya course which is now being reviewed. So — here’s the English translation.
Thorsten's work is splendid. Though some recostructions are controversial (i.e. pronouns, consonant mutations, elements of the conjugation) the course is the next big step in the research of Sindarin, the Noble Tongue. It is a very important attempt in making a summary of all we know about Sindarin at the moment.

Humphrey Carpenter's biography in 1976. It tells for the first time in full the story of the TCBS, Tolkien's group of school friends, and I hope it is a fitting tribute to his fellow members GB Smith and RQ Gilson, who died in the Great War, and to Christopher Wiseman, who survived it. It also recounts Tolkien's journey on the Western Front in 1916, drawing upon many personal and military records to describe the trenches and towns he saw and the actions in which he took part. But my book contains much more about Tolkien's mythological and linguistic ideas than Carpenter's biography. I have examined the relationship between language and myth in Tolkien's thought, and tried to suggest reasons why, at this particular point in time, he realised there was a connection between the two. I have also expounded on the key technical aspects of his language construction in a way that I hope the average reader will understand and enjoy; and I have tried to sketch out the state of the mythology in 1915-16, before Tolkien began the Lost Tales, using mainly the Qenya Lexicon. I hope that these latter points will interest readers of Gwaith-i-Phethdain in particular. An Epilogue provides a careful critical appraisal of _The Book of Lost Tales_, and attempts to explain why it was never completed before its gradual transformation into _The Silmarillion_. As a Postscript to my book, I provide an essay arguing that Tolkien's mythology, from its very beginnings in 1914-15, was a reaction to the First World War, and should be read not as escapism but as a powerful counterblow against the disenchantment that afflicted whole generations as a result of the war."
